Rodney L. Courson, age 70, of Newark, passed away on February 2, 2026 at Newark Rehabilitation. He was born January 24, 1956 in Newark, Ohio to the late Robert Lee Courson and the late Eleanor Yvonne (Gyure) Courson.
Rodney cared about his home health staff and their families and they became his family, especially after the death of his mother. He was known fondly as “Uncle Rodney” to them. A collector at heart, Rodney had a passion for comic books, action figures, and sports memorabilia, notably his beloved New York Yankees jerseys and OSU Buckeyes gear. With a steadfast rule of "don’t touch my comic books or baseball hats," Rodney’s collection was an extension of his vibrant personality. He loved an ice cold Coca Cola.
Neighbors and their dogs were frequent visitors, drawn by Rodney’s love for pets and warm conversations. Rodney attended the Neal Avenue United Methodist Church and was a firm believer in the Salvation of Jesus Christ. He left every interaction with heartfelt expressions of, “God Bless You” and “I Love You.”
He is survived by his many caregivers who loved him; and uncles, Herbert Downs, Cecil (Terri) Downs, and Marion Downs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents who helped raise him.
Rodney will be laid to rest next to his mother at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to thank his years of caregivers, the Licking County Aging Program, and Catholic Social Services for their years of service and attention to Rodney's care.
Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home is honored to care for Rodney and his family.
