Richard Edwin Swetnam, cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the age of 99. Born on February 15, 1926, in Columbus, Ohio, Dick’s life was an inspiring journey of dedication to family, country, and community.
Dick was raised in Kirkersville where he graduated from Kirkersville High School in the class of 1944. His commitment to serving others was exemplified early through his service in the Army Air Force, where he proudly contributed to his country during a significant period in history. Following his military service, Dick dedicated 40 years as a switch operator with the B & O Railroad, where his hard work and commitment left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the industry.
In the Granville, Ohio, area where he resided, Dick was not only a respected community member but also an enthusiastic bird watcher, finding peace and joy in nature’s splendor. His deep appreciation for the natural world was shared with family and friends, leaving a legacy of love for the outdoors that will be cherished by generations.
Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lila Swetnam, as well as his parents, Frank L. Swetnam and Gertrude Florence Swetnam. He leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor his memory: sons, Randy (Sharon) and Richard (Vicki); daughters, Linda (Roger) Ridgely and Brenda Wolpert; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Jack Fleming.
A funeral service celebrating Dick’s life will be held on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Kirkersville home of HOSKINSON Funeral Home, 285 E. Main Street in Kirkersville, with visitation commencing at 12:00 Noon. Following the service, Dick will receive full military honors by the Licking County Veterans Alliance and be laid to rest beside his beloved Lila at the Kirkersville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hoskinson Funeral Home in Kirkersville, who will ensure that Dick's final journey is marked with the honor and dignity he so greatly deserves.
Dick will be deeply missed by all who knew him, yet his legacy of love, dedication, and passion for life will continue to inspire those he leaves behind. We celebrate a life well-lived and a man truly loved.
