Obituary

Patrick François Aubourg, of Granville, OH, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026. He was our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, godfather, father-in-law, son and friend to many. His greatest loves were family, the sea and desserts, followed closely by a love for learning and discovery. He was incredibly kind and had a terrific sense of humor. He loved puzzles, creating scavenger hunts for all of us, music, history, learning about different religions, making extraordinary cakes, mysteries and sailing. He was born to the late Simone and Charles Aubourg in Paris, France, in 1943, where he lived until he was ten years old. At that age his father’s job took the family to Reunion Island, 580 miles east of Madagascar, where he lived for five years. This period of his life was remembered very fondly as a time of great adventure and exploration. Upon returning from Reunion Island, the family settled in Cherbourg, France, where they remained for a number of years. Patrick soon went to Paris and earned his degree in metallurgy at École Centrale de Paris. Following that he received a Fulbright Scholarship to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where he remained for two years and completed a Master’s in Ceramic Engineering. While in Cleveland he met the love of his life, Anne. They got married in Cleveland in 1969 and then moved to Paris, France, where they lived for the next four years. Their daughter Delphine was born there. While in Paris, Patrick fulfilled his mandatory military service for one year and worked for the Phillips Company for three years. Their next journey was back to the United States to Schenectady, NY, where Patrick worked for General Electric and where their daughter Claire was born. Subsequently they moved to Boston, MA, where Patrick studied at MIT and received his PhD in Material Science. They loved Boston, but an interesting job opened for Patrick in Granville, OH at Owens Corning Fiberglas and so off they went. Patrick worked for many years as a Material Scientist, who specialized in the structure of glass, and retired from there in 2006. Upon retiring Patrick and Anne had a lot of fun traveling, spending time with their family and sharing their love of life. He also discovered a love for making turned wooden bowls and offering them as presents. He was a gifted discoverer of new things and loved figuring out the process of how things worked, whether understanding how something mechanical he was looking at functioned, how to make a new recipe, how to build a bookshelf or how to do something more efficiently. He was a wonderful, delightful, friendly, clever, loving, smart man, and we all miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife Anne, his daughters Delphine and Claire, his sons-in-law David and Hugo, his grandchildren Elodie, Madeleine, Théo and Nicolas, his brother Michel, his sisters-in-law Betsy and Colette, his brother-in-law Patrick, his godson Nicolas, his nieces and nephews Olivier, Sophie, Antoine, Henriette, Guillaume, Rémi, Nathalie, Laure, Cécile and Odile, as well as their spouses, numerous cousins, great nieces and great nephews. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation in his memory to The Works (a terrific museum in Newark, OH that he loved) at 55 S.1st St., Newark, OH 43055 or The Alzheimer’s Association. The celebration of life will be private. All are welcome to an open house from 3:30-5:30pm on Friday, September 4th at the College Town House, 334 E. Broadway, Granville, OH 43203.
