Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial for Patricia M. Belhorn neé MacDougall, a longtime Granville resident, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 785 Newark-Granville Road, Granville, Ohio with Fr. Timothy Hayes as celebrant. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Pataskala.

Pat passed on Friday, October 16, 2026, on the eve of her eighty-third birthday, having lived her final year at the St. Augustine Towers in Cleveland, Ohio. Pat was the widow of Paul C. Belhorn, who passed on October 19, 2010.

Pat was born in South Euclid, Ohio to the late Robert and Eileen MacDougall. After graduating from Regina High School, Pat entered the Sisters of Notre Dame for discernment and eventually took vows, serving as a nun until 1970. Although initially she left the convent with a plan to enter a different religious order, she met Paul, and the two married in 1972. Pat continued her vocation teaching primary education in Catholic schools for another decade. She taught at Gesu, St. Robert’s and St. William’s schools in the Diocese of Cleveland.

In 1982, she and Paul moved to Middletown, New Jersey where she was an active parishioner at St. Mary’s Church. In addition to serving as the Director of the New York Office for the Comptroller of the Currency, Paul entered the diaconate and eventually served as an ordained deacon in the Catholic Church.

Pat and Paul raised four children: Scott Belhorn; Matthew Belhorn; Tara Khan; and Elizabeth Belhorn. While living in New Jersey, they also fostered dozens of other children. In 1991, the family realized a long-cherished dream of building a home in Granville, Ohio, and her four children all graduated from Granville High School.

Pat devoted her life to the welfare of children and remained active in religious education throughout her life. She ran a daycare out of the family’s home in Granville for more than a decade. As a deacon’s wife, she ministered to families, preparing them for the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation.

Inspired by the saints, Pat gave generously and forgave instantly. She was an avid gardener who took great joy in plants and flowers. She traveled widely, visiting several continents, and all but one of the fifty U.S. states. She enjoyed sewing and decorating her home. She made incredible costumes from scratch and practiced other forms of handicraft. Always active in liturgical music, she loved coaxing others to raise their voices and sing. She read historical novels one after another and could recite long poems from memory, even in Gaelic and Middle English. Her love of words was irrepressible, as was as her devotion to Jesus Christ.

Surviving are her four children, her granddaughters Sophia, Morgan, Aiza, and Bliss, and her grandson Musa; and her siblings Barbara, James, Susan, Joanne, and Robert.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday October 21st, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the McPEEK-HOEKSTA HOSKINSON FUNERAL HOME at 133 South Prospect Street, Granville, Ohio, telephone: 740-587-0161.
