Mark Joseph Schaff

Mark Joseph Schaff passed away peacefully, after several strokes, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the age of 76. Born in Springfield, Ohio, on May 28, 1949, Mark lived a life marked by dedication, love, and a passion for his work and the family farm.

Mark received his Bachelor’s Degree from Yale University and went on to earn his Master's Degree in Labor and Human Resources from The Ohio State University, and also earned a Master's Degree in Economics from Case Western Reserve. These academic achievements laid the foundation for his productive career as a Labor Market Economist with the State of Ohio, where he served with distinction for over 30 years.

Mark's love for music was a constant throughout his life. Known for his playing of the saxophone, he was an avid enthusiast of classic jazz, finding solace and joy in its melodies. Beyond music, Mark cherished his time on his beloved tree farm, finding peace in the natural world.

Mark's memory will be forever cherished by his loving family, including his daughter, Sarah T. Schaff and his wife, Gema (Opitz) Schaff. He is also survived by his cousin, Val (Amy) Schaff; stepdaughters, Marina Opitz, Lorena (Jim) White, and Gudrun (Dirk) Winter. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Virginia Lee Schaff, along with his cousin, Mary Schaff.

Mark's life will be honored at the Kirkersville Chapel of Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service, 285 E. Main Street, Kirkersville, Ohio, on Saturday, September 20, 2025. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., family and friends may visit during calling hours. At 1:00 p.m., a Celebration of Life Service will be held. Following the service, Mark will be laid to rest in Kirkersville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Mark would prefer that you plant a tree at your home and enjoy your favorite jazz music in his memory. This gesture reflects his passion for nature and music, continuing his desire to share that enjoyment with family and friends.
