A funeral service celebrating the life of Lamar O. Woods, age 84, of Newark, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with his pastor, Advance Presiding Elder Mark Bobo officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens where military honors will be observed by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.

Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street in Newark.

Lamar was born February 8, 1941, in West Blocton, Alabama, to the late Sr. Deacon Willie Woods Sr. and Sr. Mother Gertrude Woods (Banks). He passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at his home.

Lamar was a veteran of the United States Army and faithfully served his country from November 1963 to November 1965 during the Vietnam era.

Prior to his enlistment, he served as a page for a congressman in Washington, DC, from 1960 to 1961. He retired in 2009 from the City of Newark following 32 years of dedicated service as an equipment operator with the Street Department.

An avid fan of classic cars, Lamar also enjoyed drag racing, well known for his talent behind the wheel, and was an excellent basketball player. He was greatly respected and loved by all who had the honor of being in his presence.

He was a member of the Supreme Council of the House of Jacob in Columbus. Elder Lamar Woods, as he was known by his church family, drove for several church dignitaries including the Supreme Bishop, the Supreme Mother, as well as other senior saints in Newark and elsewhere.

He is survived by his sons Niels Woods, Adjuane “Lamar” Woods, and Donté Woods; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; 21 nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Lamar Woods Jr.; granddaughter, Téa Woods; his brothers, Adv. Presiding Elder Willie Woods Jr. and Adv. Presiding Elder Marvin E. Woods; and his sisters, Adv. Sr. Mother Martha Herd, Sr. Mother Bernice James, Eldress Juanita Woods, Eldress Jacqueline Woods, and Marva Jean Woods.

The family would like to extend special thanks to VA of Columbus, Ohio, VA of Newark, Ohio, Pagrin Home Health Services, Village Care Givers, and Sr. Mother Merit Rutland for help with Lamar’s care.
