James Carlos Newlon, (Jim) 57, of Newark, passed away peacefully July 20th, 2025 at home surrounded by family after a short but brutal battle with renal cell carcinoma.
His career as a school bus driver for Newark City Schools was more than a job, it was his pride and joy. He took joy in keeping “his kids” safe and making them smile each day.
Jim loved the outdoors from deer hunting, camping, to his garden. He never missed a Toys for Tots motorcycle run, and his love for bikes was only matched by his joy in working on cars.
But above all else, Jim was a devoted “Paw.” His grandchildren were the absolute highlight of his life. He would light up at the mention of their names.
He is survived by his wife, Tami Newlon; his children, Cara (JD), Jimmy (Kirstan), Erin, Chris (Holly), and Nick (Sarah); and his beloved grandchildren: Savannah, Rayshellah, Noah, Jayden, Benjamin, Peyton, Sophia, Abigail, and Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dee and Genevia Newlon; his brother, Glen Newlon; and other loved ones who welcomed him home.
James leaves behind many siblings, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were lucky enough to call him family. He was the kind of man whose legacy will live on in stories around campfires, the rumble of a motorcycle, and the garden rows that come to life each spring.
In lieu of flowers, hug your loved ones tight, plant something green, maybe rev your engine a little louder for him, and consider a donation to the OSU James Cancer Center, or Bellacare Hospice.
The family would like to thank Caitlyn, Ashley, and Daniel from Bellacare for their compassionate care of Jim.
Celebration of Life will be held on August 3, 2025 at the American Legion from 3 p.m. to 6p.m. with the Newark City Schools providing “The Last Stop” bus tribute at 3:15.
