Elizabeth “Beth” Knight Cochran, nearly 95 years of age, passed away on Saturday morning, January 21, 2023, at Crane’s Mill in West Caldwell, New Jersey, where she had been a resident since its opening in 1998.
Born on February 26, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, Beth grew up in Chicago with her parents, Robert Greenwell Knight and Elizabeth Moore Knight, and her brother, Robert Greenwell Knight, Jr.
Beth was a graduate of Smith College and was working for Northwestern University when she met her husband, Robert Cochran. Bob, a World War II veteran who attended Kings Point College, became an engineer with the Worthington Corporation after which they moved to New Jersey and resided in Murray Hill for years before moving to Crane’s Mill.
Beth’s parents graduated from the University of Manitoba where she established the Robert and Elizabeth Knight Distinguished Visitors Program in their memory. Her father, a World War I veteran, was also a graduate of the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business where she established the Robert Greenwell Knight Scholarship in his memory.
Beth and her husband Bob loved to travel and spent many years traveling around the world. Beth spoke French and always fondly remembered how the French treated them on a visit to Normandy when they learned that Bob was a World War II veteran.
Beth was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother. Beth and Bob moved to Crane’s Mill when Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson’s so that Bob’s niece, Diana Lanza, and her husband John of Caldwell could watch over Beth after he passed away, which they have been doing since Bob passed away in 2000.
Beth was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell, but funeral services will take place with family members in Mount Gilead, OH, where Beth will be laid to rest with her husband, Bob, and his brother, Dean, and his wife, Jean, who are Diana’s parents, and Hank and Edie Ruth, Bob’s sister.
Suggestions for a memorial contribution are the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell, 326 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell, NJ 07006, or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
Visitation will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 3, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home, 179 Granville Street, Newark, Ohio, where a funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Rivercliff Union Cemetery, 201 East Marion Street, Mount Gilead, Ohio.
