Dwain Rex Hackley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, in Newark, Ohio. Born on May 9, 1939, in Canton, Ohio, Rex lived a life full of love, dedication, and music.
Rex was a dedicated Operations Supervisor with Phillips Petroleum Company, where he worked diligently for nearly 30 years. He was also a proud veteran, having served his country with honor in the United States Navy.
In addition to his career and military service, Rex had a lifelong passion for music, playing in many bluegrass bands throughout the decades. His talents on the Dobro, guitar, and electric guitar brought joy to many. Rex enjoyed spending his leisure time golfing, fishing, and cherishing moments with family and friends.
Rex is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Bessie M. (Shank) Hackley, whom he wed on December 2, 2006. He leaves behind his beloved children, Sandra Lee Harmon, Michael Wayne Jones, Brenda Eileen (Kenneth) Romine, and Thomas Edward (Florence) Jones. He was a cherished brother to Max Hackley and a proud grandfather to Westin, Dustin, Tyler, Kendra, Stephenie, and Hunter, along with numerous great-grandchildren and friends who will miss his warm presence dearly.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Donald Hackley and Dicy (Mae) Hackley, who have welcomed him home with open arms.
Rex's legacy of love, music, and devotion to family and friends will forever live in the hearts of those who knew him. As a testament to his life and service, donations can be made in his memory to the American Legion, Post #85 in Newark, Ohio.
Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service in Newark is honored to assist the Hackley family during this time of loss.
Plans for a celebration of Rex's life will be shared with family and friends. He will be dearly missed but his music will forever play in our hearts.
Rest in peace, Rex. Your melody lingers on, timeless and precious.
