Donald Dale Pheneger, a beloved member of the Granville, Ohio community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on December 1, 1933, in Newark, Ohio, Donald led a life dedicated to education, service, and community beautification.
A proud alumnus of Granville High School, Donald went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from Denison University, where he was an active member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. His passion for learning didn't stop there, as he pursued further studies at the University of Nebraska and The Ohio State University.
Donald dedicated nearly 30 years to shaping young minds as a school teacher with the Granville Village School System, primarily at Granville Middle School, from 1969 until his retirement in 1998. His commitment to education was recognized through numerous awards, including the Ohio Academy of Science Acker Outstanding Teacher Award, the Jodi Van Tine Hall of Honor Award, and the Aspire's Salute to Excellence Award.
In addition to his educational career, Donald served his country with honor as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, from 1959 to 1969. His dedication to service was further exemplified by his membership in the National Teachers Association, Ohio Teachers Association, and Granville Teachers Association.
After retiring from teaching, Donald continued to contribute to his community by serving on the Granville Tree and Landscape Commission, reflecting his lifelong passion for environmental beautification. An Eagle Scout, he embodied the Scout's duty to community throughout his life.
Donald is reunited in eternal peace with his parents, Herman Dale Pheneger and Teresa Elizabeth Pheneger, his beloved wife Diane Pheneger, infant sister Constance Lee Pheneger, and brother Richard Pheneger.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service, surviving through his children, Donald (Alison) Pheneger and Douglas (Beth) Pheneger; grandchildren, Andrew (Jocie Johnson) Pheneger and Alex Pheneger; and numerous cousins and friends, all of whom will cherish his memory.
At Donald's request, a private graveside service will be held, with military honors provided by the Licking County Veteran's Alliance. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dawes Arboretum in memory of Donald's commitment to nature and education.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service in Newark, which is honored to care for Donald and his family during this time of remembrance. May his dedication to his family, students, and community inspire future generations.
