Charles Richard Palmer

Charles R. "Dick" Palmer, 87 of Newark, passed away April 28, 2025. He was born in Thornville on May 6, 1937, to the late Willard and Aelene Palmer of Thornville.

Having survived Polio at age 13, he joined the United States Air Force at age 17 rising to the rank of T/Sgt. He proudly served for 20 years and 12 days in the US Air Force. A Flight Engineer on the AC-130A Gunship in Vietnam and served three tours. Flying 220 combat missions out of Thailand for three years. Awarded three distinguished Flying Cross, thirty Air medals, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

After retiring from the Air Force, he relocated to Alaska where he served as a Wing Commander of the Alaska Civil Air Patrol. He retired with the rank of Colonel after twenty years of service.

He is survived by his sisters Carole Acord and Kaye Alban. Nephews Thomas Houston and Matthew Alban. Nieces Chris Bailey, Wilda Armstrong and Leah Keller.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Charlotte Belden Palmer, his brother Theodore, brothers-in-law Doug Acord and Reese Alban, and his niece Andrea O'Connell.

Friends may call on Friday May 30, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Thornville home of HOSKINSON Funeral and Cremation Service, 56 S Main Street in Thornville, where services celebrating his amazing accomplished life will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Tom Jacobsen as celebrant. Dick will be laid to rest with his family in the Zion Ridge Cemetery, near Thornville with full military honors by the Thornville Post of the American Legion.

The family wishes to thank the skilled and compassionate caregivers of Hospice of Central Ohio for their outstanding supportive care of Dick in his final illness.
In lien of flowers, memorials in Dick's name made be directed to the Thornville Post of the American Legion, DAV Newark Chapter, The March of Dimes, or The Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio.
