Obituary

Rev. Charles Michael Luke, a devoted minister, cherished father, grandfather, great grandfather, and beloved community member, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Arlington Care Center in Newark, at the age of 88. Born in Canton, Ohio, on Monday, May 16, 1938, Charles dedicated nearly 50 years of his life to ministering at various churches, touching innumerable lives through his kindness, wisdom, and commitment to faith.

Charles was preceded in death by his father, Charles T. Luke; his mother, Betty (Kover) Luke; his first wife, Marjorie Luke; his second wife, Phyllis Luke; his son, Charles Luke; his daughter, Connie Laughery; and his brothers, Robert Luke and Carlton Luke. Despite these profound losses, Charles remained a pillar of strength and love for his family and community.

He is survived by his loving children, Debbie (Rob) McKenna, Sue (Dale) Slevin, Gary (Shelley) Luke, Sarah (Mike) Osborne, and Rebekah (Craig) Westerlund, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends, all of whom he cherished dearly.

In addition to his ministry, Charles had a passion for woodworking, automobiles, and playing bingo. He was a dedicated preacher and teacher, sharing his love for the Bible with church congregations and nursing home residents alike. A lifelong learner, Charles was known for his studious nature and his enthusiasm for gaining and sharing knowledge.

Family and friends are invited to a Visitation on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home, 179 Granville Street, Newark. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in honor of Charles on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Newark Baptist Temple, 81 Licking View Dr., Heath, with Pastor Mark Falls officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery.
