Charles Raymond “Charlie” Byers, age 81, of Heath, passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at The Inn at Chapel Grove. Charlie was born June 2, 1945 in Newark, Ohio to the late Lewis Sherman and Florence (McCollough) Byers.

Charlie retired from AA Pro Shop in Hebron where he was manager. Before his tenure at the pro shop, he was an innkeeper in upstate New York. Charlie's expertise and zeal for golf found him roles as a superintendent at both Airport Golf Course and Bolton Field Golf Course in the Columbus area. Notably, he and his family were instrumental in building the Hillcrest Golf Course in Johnstown, a testament to his lifelong love for the game.

An avid golfer, Charlie could often be found on the greens, perfecting his swing or sharing tips with his friends. When not on the course, he indulged in watching sports, always cheering for the OSU Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns. Charlie also had a voracious appetite for reading, particularly enjoying mystery novels.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Nickell and Kurt Simko of Pickerington; granddaughter, Hilary (Trent) Speelman; brother, Roy “Buck” (Joyce) Byers; sisters, Janice Stone, Phyllis (Steve) Wirick, Betty (Dave) Young, and Mary Serpentini; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lewis S. Byers, Jr. and Mike Byers.

Friends may call from 3-5 p.m. on Monday, October 19, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home, 179 Granville Street in Newark.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Licking County Humane Society.

Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home is honored to care for Charlie and his family.
