Charles Edward Bird, of Granville, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, November 9th, 2025, at the age of 82. He was born on March 18, 1943, in Hurricane, West Virginia, to the late Charles Earnest Bird and Virginia (Wheeler) Bird Ward.
Charles was a dedicated heavy equipment operator, proudly serving the George J. Igel & Co., Inc. company for over 34 years. His work ethic and dedication were an inspiration to many who worked alongside him through the years.
He was an active member of the Newark Free Will Baptist Church. In his leisure time, Charles was passionate about collecting John Deere memorabilia, and he particularly enjoyed a cup, or several pots, of coffee or indulging in fudgesicles, a treat he savored after every meal. His love for his wife Betty's homemade ice cream was well-known and was still carried on after her passing.
Charlie is survived by his loving children, Don (Kelly) Bird and Robin Gress. He was a proud grandfather to Jeremy (Kristin) Bird, Michelle (Max) Hughes, Paul (Kendra) Gress, and Jessica Gress, and a great-grandfather to Claire Bird and Jeff Hughes. Charles is also survived by his dear sister, Wanda Sovine, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Betty Jean Gillispie, to whom he was devoted; his sister, Delores Bird Ward and his granddaughter, Hope Marie Gress.
Family and friends may call on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at the Newark Free Will Baptist Church, 37 N Westmoor Ave, Newark, OH 43055, from 11:00am until the time of funeral service at 1:00pm with Matt Bryant officiating. Burial to follow in Kirkersville Cemetery.
