Ann Rita Brenner

Ann Rita Brenner of Thornville, Ohio, was called to her eternal rest on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the age of 102. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, on August 10, 1923, to the late Lyman and Helen Getreu Spung.

Ann “Rita” retired from the State of Ohio as a secretary. She was a faithful and devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Rita was an active member of the community, finding joy and friendship as a past member of Mt. Carmelite and the Buckeye Lake Seniors. 

She was a loving wife and mother. Rita enjoyed being with family and friends. She had a strong, yet gentle, kind and positive spirit and always had a smile. With an interested, inquiring mind, she loved reading, playing cards, doing puzzles, crosswords, games and coloring. Her deep faith sustained and strengthened her. She enjoyed traveling and being in nature especially at the lake or beach. 

Rita is survived by her sister Florence Morris and children, Linda Fisher (formerly Girouard), Lois (Tim) Merrill, and John (Candy) Brenner; grandchildren, Helena Girouard, Rachel Girouard, Joe (Ikeya) Merrill, Richard (Lisa) Merrill, Justin (Angie) Brenner, Jacob Brenner, Jessica Brenner, Laura (Jason) Lapat, Christy (Mark) Diaz, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her dear husband of 66 years, John “Jack” Brenner, whom she married on October 25, 1948. Also preceding her in death is her son, Thomas Brenner, his wife Barb; grandson, Armand Girouard, and brothers, Albert and Robert Spung. 

A memorial service to celebrate Rita will be held in the chapel at Saint Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S High St., Lockbourne, Ohio, on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 11:00am. Family, friends, and all whose lives Ann Rita touched are invited to attend and honor her memory. Interment to follow.
